Les Ai-Ren sont des "humains créés artificiellement dont le but est de soulager le désespoir d'un patient pendant les derniers moments de sa vie".C'est ainsi qu'un certain Ikuru Yoshizumi, atteint d'une "maladie" mortelle, fit la demande d'avoir son Ai-Ren.Par le passé, Ikuru eut un grave accident avec ses parents et perdit plus de la moitié de son corps. Ses parents, quant à eux, ne survécurent pas à l'accident.Pour sauver Ikuru, une certaine personne lui donna quelques sortes d'implants, ce qui le sauva miraculeusement.Cependant, Ikuru ne survit que grâce à la moitié de son corps qui ne lui appartient pas mais cela ne veut pas dire que cette moitié sera capable d'assimiler ou ne faire qu'un avec son vrai corps.Cette autre moitié inconnue est en train de manger sa vie alors qu'elle le maintient vivant en même temps...Ikuru parviendra-t-il à faire face à son destin grâce à la chaleur et la présence d'Ai, son Ai-Ren, elle aussi condamné à une courte vie?
